Excursions

Castiglione offers as an ideal starting point for numerous interesting excursions like turistic-environment, historic-artistic and archeological. Grosseto encircled by its esagonal walls which was constructed by the Medici between 1574 and 1593 can infact be found very close by the very well known turistic destination of “Punta Ala” and the beautiful “Cala Violina”, a white sandy beach which allows the sea to be extraordinary crystal clear and it has received the award as one of the eleven pearls of Italy by the “Legambiente”.

Other suggestive “Borghi”such as “Vetulonia”founded in IX century B.C. which became among the richest and most flourishing Etruscan cities is worth visiting. Other important Medieval centres and archeological sites as the antique Etruscan settlement of “Roselle”(dated back to VII-VI century B.C) or as the ruins of the antique “Salebrum” founded by the Romans close by the estuary of the river “ Bruna”. Other fascinating places like “Pitigliano”defined as the jewel of tuff for its extraordinary and sophisticated architecture are all castled on a high tuffaceous point or as “Sorano” and “Sovana” with their suggestive and characteristic Etruscan era paths dug out along the tuff walls high up to twenty metres, very similar to a cyclopean secret path strewn with archeological paths.

Many artists choose the land of “Maremma” as a place for reflection and artistic creations. It also impresses the international panorama of contemporary art as shown in the presence of the “Giardino” created by Daniel Spoerri in Seggiano or the enchantable and extraordinary “Giardino dei Tarocchi” where Niki de Saint Phalle has created an estate near ”Capalbio”.
